It sounds like such a simple question doesn’t it, but all writers, no matter how long they’ve been writing, know that there’s no simple answer to that question.
Still, here are a selection of tips and insights that should help you discover a time that suits you.
The optimum time to write will always be when you have no distractions. Of course, that sadly doesn’t always mean that such a time will coincide with your creativity flowing.
So where possible find yourself a writing spot that supports your creativity, one with a door or just a low buzz of the world around you.
Failing that, try wearing a pair of sound-proof headphones or just a regular pair (regardless of whether you have music playing or not).
Chores and responsibilities can be a great distraction - especially if we haven’t done them.
This is why many writers find they do their best work at the end of the day when they can happily say, ‘I’ve done everything I need to do for the day.’
So try and get everything you need to do finished early in the day, or choose to write in the evening.
Following on from being free of distractions is the fact that being able to concentrate will automatically lead to clearer and more inspired ideas. Never a bad thing when you’re plotting your story or trying to come up with the right words to put on the page.
I’m not sure if it relates to the tip above or not, but it has been proven most people are more creative after 10pm.
Plus, just for the record, we’re least creative after 4.30pm.
Another interesting fact relating to night-time writing is that the brain is often more creative when we’re tired. Perhaps because we restrict our thoughts with less logic…
Well, there you go, those are my thoughts.
Let me know if they help.
