Let’s face it, long nails and typing have never really gone together too well.
But, despite that, many of us really don’t like having to opt for one or the other. So here are some proven tips that should definitely help lessen the amount misspelt words and chipped, or broken, nails.
THE BEST SHAPED NAIL
Although there are a variety of shapes you can choose to have your nails, round has always been the best option for typing.
So, even if you prefer square or perhaps stiletto styles, consider starting with rounded ones and working your way up from there.
YOUR TYPING STYLE
When we start typing, we’re taught (or learn) to press the tip of each finger on to the key, however when your nails are longer you need to press the keys with the pad of your finger. It’s a skill that might take a bit of time to perfect, but it’s essential if you want to avoid continually hitting the wrong keys.
AVOIDING THE PAIN
A drawback to the above typing tip is that when you move your fingers differently, your hands and wrists also move differently. This in turn can result in pulled muscles, initial soreness and maybe even carpal tunnel syndrome.
So in the early days of transition remember to take regular breaks to stretch your fingers and wrists, plus if necessary find something soft to place between your keypad and wrists.
TAP, TAP, TAP
Another thing to accept is that with longer nails there’s a high chance that the sound of you clicking away on the keyboard is going to be not only louder but also higher in pitch. This is just a fact.
If it bothers you or anybody else, try hitting the keys more gently. It will protect your nails as well as the silence. But no matter what kind of keyboard you use, it’s highly unlikely that typing will ever be silent.
TALK TO TEXT
Then finally, if you’ve tried all these suggestions and still aren’t happy with the results, why not consider looking into getting yourself a ‘talk to text’ programme? It’ll definitely be cheaper than hiring your own secretary or transcriber. Plus it means the only typing you’ll have to do is clicking a few buttons to start the programme recording and correcting the odd misspelt or misheard word.
Good luck and continue looking glamorous!
